Gross Pay
Gross pay is the total you earn for a pay period before any taxes or deductions come out. It includes salary or hourly wages plus overtime, tips, bonuses, commissions and any other pay for that period.
A $60,000 salary paid every two weeks is $2,307.69 gross per check. An hourly worker at $25 for 40 hours a week earns $2,000 gross over two weeks, and overtime hours pay 1.5 times the rate. The salary to hourly calculator converts between the two. The FAQ gives a short answer to what gross pay is.
Subtract taxes and deductions and you get net pay. A pre-tax deduction lowers taxable wages, so some taxes are figured on less than your gross pay. See the gross pay vs net pay guide and why a paycheck can look so low.
