How to convert salary to an hourly wage
- Multiply the hours you work a week by the weeks you are paid a year. Full time is 40 x 52 = 2,080 hours.
- Divide the salary by that number of hours.
- To go the other way, multiply the hourly wage by the hours a year.
A quick shortcut: double the hourly wage and add three zeros for a rough yearly salary. $20.00 an hour is about $40,000 (exactly $41,600).
What the conversion leaves out
An hourly job pays for every extra hour, and federal law requires 1.5 times pay after 40 hours for most hourly workers. Many salaried workers are exempt from overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act, so a 50-hour week lowers their real hourly rate. At $60,000, 50 hours a week works out to $23.08 an hour, not $28.85.
