FIT

FIT is the pay stub abbreviation for federal income tax withheld from your pay. Payroll systems also print it as FITW, FWT, FWH, Fed WH or Fed Withholding. They all mean the same deduction.

FIT is separate from FICA. FIT depends on your Form W-4 and your pay, while FICA is a flat 7.65% for most people. The FAQ explains how FICA differs from federal income tax.

If the FIT line is zero, check whether your W-4 claims exempt or whether your pay is below the standard deduction on an annual basis. The state version is SWT. See federal income tax withholding for how the amount is figured.
