Paid Family Leave

Paid family leave is a state program that pays part of your wages while you care for a new child or a seriously ill family member. Most programs also cover your own serious health condition, and they are funded by contributions taken through payroll.

Each state sets its own contribution rate, wage cap and split between employee and employer. In some states the employer pays only above a set number of employees. The deduction may be labeled PFL, PFML, FLI or FAMLI on a stub.

For employers it is one of the state costs that sit on top of employer payroll taxes. Each state page in the payroll calculator by state lists the programs that apply there. The disability side is covered under state disability insurance.
